Gene Hackman’s pacemaker stopped working nine days before his lifeless body was discovered, authorities confirmed.

“A preliminary analysis of Gene Hackman’s pacemaker has been conducted. It was last operational on February 17, 2025. I have been informed that a more detailed investigation will be completed soon,” said Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza at a press conference.

Mendoza also stated that no carbon monoxide was found in the bodies of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The official cause of death has yet to be determined.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office previously told Page Six that they do not believe any criminal activity took place but that nothing is being ruled out. Their deaths have been classified as suspicious.

The two-time Oscar winner turned 95 last month. His last film was shot in 2004, and he had rarely appeared in public since.

He later moved from Los Angeles to New Mexico, making the decision to leave the film industry due to stress and heart problems.
